Musharraf’s farmhouse power supply ordered disconnected

JULY 19 - Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) on Saturday directed disconnecting electricity supply to former president Pervez Musharraf’s farmhouse after he failed to clear outstanding dues.

Musharraf who is presently based in London, has been travelling between UAE and London recently and there are reports that he is making plans to launch himself in politics soon after September 2009 when the two-year restriction for ex-COAS to enter politics ends.

PEPCO Managing Director Tahir Basharat said Musharraf, and 34 other residents of Chak Shahzad in capital Islamabad, had been issued notices over the misuse of electricity and their failure to pay outstanding electricity bills. He said the order had been issued after Musharraf did not pay the PEPCO dues.

Musharraf on Friday told an Indian TV that India did not presently pose a greater threat to Pakistan than the extremists and the Taliban. Pakistan does not pose external threats. It faces internal threats, he said in the interview quoted by media Friday.

PEPCO CEO Basharat also said between 20 and 26 percent increase in power tariff would become inevitable if the government withdrew the Rs 55 billion subsidy to the power sector. IMF has preconditioned more loans to Pakistan on such conditions but the Pak team recently managed to convince IMF to temporarily put off such removal of subsidy as demanded.
